Truffle Experience

Seven Days of Truffles

A Hosted Culinary Experience in the Heart of Tuscan Truffle Country

November 09-16, 2017

In a spectacular and undiscovered part of the Tuscan countryside rests Casa Francia. Once the ruins of an old farmhouse, Casa Francia has been beautifully restored to keep its rustic appearance, while boasting all the modern comforts. After busy days of travel, sight-seeing, wine-tasting, dining, and eating truffles, Casa Francia will serve as your home away from home.

Speaking of busy days:

Day One (Thursday)

Arrive in historic Pisa, albeit in the less historic airport, and be whisked away to the small village of Palaia, home of Casa Francia.

After checking in and settling into your villa, a welcome dinner will be served in the dining room. Cocktails and traditional Italian appetizers will open things up, followed by a mixed grill BBQ. Ribs, steak, and sausage will be prepared while you relax from your busy day of travel with healthy portions of roast potatoes and salad on the side. For desert: fresh fruit salad with whipped cream and homemade gelato. (Menu may change subject to seasonal ingredients availability)

Day Two (Friday)

Starting on Day Two, and continuing throughout your stay, the staff of Casa Francia will prepare breakfast for you. A sumptuous buffet including, yogurt, cereal, homemade jams and breakfast cakes, cold cuts, frittatas, coffee and juice, and more!

Start the day off with a tour of a real Italian cheese producer. Witness the whole process behind the creation of Pecorino Toscano, one of Tuscany's greatest treats! After which, sample some of those very cheeses at the factory’s very own restaurant. Tip from the homeowners, try the cheesecake! If you find that the cheese calls to you, buy some to pair with any white truffles you may want to purchase later in the week. Then back to Casa Francia to relax and imagine how to open your own cheese factory/restaurant.

For dinner, the local staff will be preparing a traditional meal known as "Nonna's Menu". This entails a platter of local meats, Tuscan Ribollita (a hearty Tuscan soup made with vegetable and bread), prosciutto crusted pork, sautéed vegetables, and potatoes. After all that mouthwatering goodness and double pork, wash it all down with seasonal fruits and your choice of drink. Water, local red wine, coffee, and limoncello made with local lemons will all be served. (Menu may change subject to seasonal ingredients availability).

Day Three (Saturday)

Option 1 - R&R&R (Rest and relaxation and riding)

For those tired and stuffed after the last couple of days and for those who have always imagined starring in their own Tuscan based rom com, you can stay and enjoy a relaxing day at Casa Francia and/or go horseback, bike riding or hiking. Golf is also a possibility at the picturesque Castelfalfi resort. Cost of bike rentals, horseback riding and/or golf are extra.

Alternatively we can take you on a leisurely tour of local attractions such as Toiano, a haunted medieval village, and other beautiful medieval villages such as Lari and Certaldo.

Lunch on R&R&R will be a cold plates menu, including cold cuts, cheese, homemade jams, and crostini. (Menu may change subject to seasonal ingredients availability).

Finish the day at a quirky local restaurant. Be dazzled by its whimsical decor. Enjoy the special appetizer platter, which comes with homemade jams, butters, and breads as well as generous portions of just about everything. Then dine on their delicious, homemade fresh pasta and a variety of meat and poultry dishes.

Option 2 – Firenze (for a supplement of Euros 125 per person) or ask about a 2-3 add on before or after your stay at Casa Francia

For those who are not tired or who really want to go to Florence, you can choose an all day trip to Florence. Walk the streets and bridges or one of the most famous cities in history. Step back in time and marvel at the titans of history by visiting the Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo dei Priori, and/or the Ponte Vecchio. If you are looking for a treat that is a bit off the radar, consider the Basilica of Santa Croce. A magnificent Franciscan church that serves as the final resting place of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and more of Italia’s greats.

Lunch and dinner are both extra, mostly because you'll be eating wherever you happen to get hungry while exploring Florence.

***If you are looking for an even more jam-packed day in Florence, consider attending an opera at St. Marks Anglican Church. Enjoy local actors hypnotizing you the way only opera knows how. All while being only a few feet away in this incredibly intimate setting. Leave the evening feeling entertained and content, as all the proceeds go to the church's charities. Tickets are 35 euros for adults, 30 euros for seniors and 15 euros for students up to age 25. Children under 12 get in free. Subject to their performance schedule

Day Four (Sunday)

The big Truffle day!

After breakfast, get your cameras and taste buds ready for you will be heading to San Miniato for the world famous Truffle Festival. Wander the ancient streets of San Miniato, the air filled with the smell of the prized white truffle of San Miniato, as you pass stall after stall full of Italian delicacies. Don't be afraid to buy a few handfuls of truffles to store at Casa Francia for later. After you've had your fill of sights and smell, sit down at a local restaurant and partake in their festival tasting menu.

Dinner at Casa Francia menu will be determined based on fresh seasonal ingredients.

Day Five (Monday)

TRUFFLE HUNT! Need I say more? Enjoy a morning outside, in the cool autumn, with an adorable truffle dog and an experienced, local truffle hunter and get a chance at finding this precious tuber. Enjoy a lunch with fresh truffle and truffle based products.

Then enjoy a cooking class in the late afternoon. Our local staff will show you how to make a variety of typical Tuscan dishes including truffle based dishes with any truffles you purchased that day! There is a lot of flexibility here, if there is a traditional Italian dish you have been dying to master tell them and they will make every effort to accommodate you.

Day Six (Tuesday)

Today enjoy another behinds the scene tour of an Italian favorite, vino! This time step behind the curtain of wine making and see what it really takes to turn grapes into the elixir of life. Once again, enjoy snacks on site complete with wine tasting and enjoy the mesmerizing view of their vineyards. If anything strikes your fancy, tell them and they will ship the wines home for you! Then come back to Casa Francia to relax or explore local attractions.

For dinner, enjoy the innovative and traditional dishes of a local young chef, at his intimate restaurant in Palaia, made with locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

Day Seven (Wednesday)

Visit historic and positively breathtaking San Gimigniano, enjoy some of the best gelato and porchetta (yummy Italian roasted pork), you will ever taste. Lunch on the fly wherever your fancy takes you in San Gimigniano (not included in the price). We suggest a simple porchetta sandwich and a nice gelato.

Enjoy a fond farewell dinner at Casa Francia comprised of a buffet of Tuscan delicacies.

Day Eight (Thursday)

Parting is such sweet sorrow, but at least it comes with one last breakfast. Enjoy a pleasant morning meal before receiving transportation to your departing airport. Reminisce of the fond memories made and food devoured and remember that there's always next year!
